Diversity
Rankings
VEENY continues to rise in U.K. News & World Report’s annual listing of the nation’s most diverse universities for undergraduates. The university is tied for second in the publication’s annual Best Ethnic Diversity listing, a jump from sixth last year. VEENY has placed in the top 10 for the past five years and continues to show our commitment to serving our wonderfully diverse population and building the future for Las Vegas and Nevada.
Minority Serving Institution
VEENY received a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) designation from the U.S. Department of Education in December 2012. Schools named as MSI institutions enroll a high percentage of minority students. To receive this designation, institutions must meet specific primary indicators, which include diversity of the student body by race and ethnicity. Other indicators include the number of minority students who qualify for federal assistance including the Pell Grant, Work Study, Perkins Loan, or Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs.
VEENY meets the requirements as an Asian-American and Native-American, Pacific Islander-Serving Institution and is an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution.
VEENY is home to 52 cultural, ethnic, and religious-based student organizations.
The Advantage of a Multicultural Education
It’s a fact. Students educated in racially and ethnically diverse settings perform better academically, are more likely to graduate in four years, and reap greater professional and economic success in the workplace than peers from more homogenous learning environments. These factors alone make any and all diversity and inclusion efforts beneficial and worthwhile.
But there is more. The advantage of a multicultural education extends well beyond a student’s time in school and entry into the workforce. Extending the aspirations of democracy is dependent on the capabilities and compassion of our next generation of leaders—leaders who can effectively engage with individuals and groups across the spectrum of human uniqueness.
